Manolo Blahnik

For nearly four decades, Manolo Blahnik, the high priest of the high heel, has made inimitable women’s footwear. His shoe designs were described by the Council of Fashion Designers of America, when he won its Stiletto Award in 1998, as ‘‘collectibles for women for whom Barbies are too girlish and Ferraris not girlish enough.”

The elegant Mr. Blahnik’s essential vision is of a shoe as high as a tower, with a heel as thin as a toothpick. These are the shoes that have become footwear icons, known to fashionistas as simply fashion  Manolos — shoes that some people call ”limousine shoes,” on the assumption that you can wear them only if you never actually have to walk anywhere.
Above all, they are shoes with the power to transform even the most practically minded woman into an elegant, coltish coquette. ”People walk differently in high heels,” Mr. Blahnik has said. ”Shall I call it suggestive? Shall I call it sensuous? You walk in a sensuous way. Your body sways to a different kind of tempo.’
